Saxophone lessons in Amarillo

One to one saxophone, any level, every week in downtown Amarillo. Concert band, jazz and section playing, taught by the person who also teaches clarinet here.

The short answers

How much are saxophone lessons in Amarillo?
$50 for an hour and $30 for a half hour, once a week. Materials are included and there is no signup fee.
Who teaches saxophone?
CJ Carter, at any level, beginner through advanced. He also teaches clarinet from beginner to intermediate, and beginner guitar, bass and piano.
Can lessons help with band and UIL?
Yes, and it is the commonest reason people come for saxophone here. A lesson is half an hour or an hour on your part, your tone and your reading, with one person listening to you and nobody else.
Do you teach clarinet too?
Yes, beginner to intermediate, taught by CJ. If you play both, which plenty of band students do, that is one teacher and one lesson rather than two.
Where and when?
818 SW 7th Avenue, Amarillo, TX 79101, inside Spacecamp Studios in downtown Amarillo. Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 7:00pm, by appointment, at the same time every week.

Who teaches it

CJ Carter

Saxophone at every level, which is the thing worth knowing: you will not outgrow the lesson in a year and have to go and find somebody else. Piano and clarinet from beginner to intermediate, and beginner guitar and bass.

CJ is the one teacher here who covers the woodwinds, so he is also the one who can tell you honestly whether what you want is a lesson or a mouthpiece.

If you are in a school band

A band hall gives you a section, a part and a concert date. What it cannot give you is half an hour a week where one person listens only to you, which is where tone, reading and the bits of your part you have been faking actually get fixed.

Lessons here run Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 7:00pm, so there are times after school and times from 9:00am in the morning, which is worth knowing if you are homeschooled or your school does a late start.

For a student who wants to go further than their own concert, the order we point people down is a recital first, to get serious about the instrument, then local competitions, then UIL and regional, then state. Say that is where you are headed when you sign up and the lessons get built toward it.

What to bring

  • Your saxophone. If you play a school instrument, bring that one
  • Whatever mouthpiece and reeds you are already playing on
  • Your band music, if the lesson is meant to help with it
  • No books to buy. Anything we work from in the lesson is included
