Guitar lessons in Amarillo

Acoustic or electric, one to one, the same half hour or hour every week in downtown Amarillo. Four of our teachers teach guitar, and a beginner plays a real song in the first lesson.

The short answers

How much are guitar lessons in Amarillo?
$50 for an hour and $30 for a half hour, once a week. Books, tab and anything else you need in the lesson are included, there is no signup fee, and you are billed monthly, twelve months a year.
Do I need my own guitar to start?
Yes, you need something to play at home between lessons, and an acoustic or an electric is equally fine for a first guitar. If you have not bought one yet, say so on the signup form and we will tell you what to get before the first lesson rather than after it.
Who teaches guitar?
Grant Fithen, Briley Stewart, CJ Carter and Jamie Y. You are told which of them you have before you book, and you keep the same teacher every week.
Where and when are guitar lessons?
818 SW 7th Avenue, Amarillo, TX 79101, in the Studio Room inside Spacecamp Studios in downtown Amarillo. Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 7:00pm, at the same time every week, by appointment.
Do you teach complete beginners, and adults?
Both. A beginner plays something recognizable in the first lesson rather than being handed a book of exercises, and the signup form asks whether the lessons are for you or for your child so the plan is written for whoever is in the room.

Your first month

Four weeks, written down before you walk in.

Week one

A song, and how to find any note

The musical alphabet and why there is no note between B and C or between E and F, how to read a chord chart, the four fret drill, and playing through "A Horse with No Name" and "Hotel California". You leave having played something you recognize.

Week two

Chords that change in time

"Free Fallin'", your first barre chord, the parts of the guitar, and tuning it yourself. Then the chord change drill: four beats on a chord and four beats of rest, then three and three, then two and two, then one and one, until there is no rest left and you are just changing chords in time.

Week three

Reading, and hands that will not hurt later

Notes on the first and second strings off the page rather than off tab, and the spider drill from the fifth fret with one finger per fret, up every string and back down. Posture, wrist and thumb position get fixed here on purpose, in the first month, because they are far harder to fix in the second year.

Week four

Eighth notes, and a conversation with your parents

Counting one and two and three and four against a metronome, so a strum lands where it is meant to instead of whenever the hand gets there. In the fourth week a parent gets three minutes in person: what their child has learned this month, what they are working toward, and whether you have heard them playing at home.

After the first month the plan is yours rather than the course’s. Which songs you want, which hand needs the work, and whether you are heading for a stage, a band practice or a back porch.

Who teaches guitar

Grant Fithen

Owner and Academy Director. A bachelor’s degree in music industry and an associate’s degree in music before that. He wrote the beginner course above, and he teaches bass and piano as well as guitar.

Briley Stewart

A guitar tech who has worked on more than 3,000 guitars. If your guitar is fighting you rather than you fighting the guitar, he is the one who will say so.

CJ Carter

Beginner guitar, alongside saxophone at every level and piano and clarinet from beginner to intermediate. A good fit for a band student who wants a second instrument.

Jamie Y.

One of our own students, who has really excelled and grown a passion to pursue studying music industry in college. She teaches guitar here now.
